OpenNIC signed root update PDF Print E-mail

OpenNIC has started work into getting the root zone DNSSEC signed. There has been alot of work as of recent going into DNSSEC for OpenNIC. Progress can be viewed at this link. Quite a few subjects related to the signing of the root are mentioned on the wiki page.

Each TLD DS key is being verified by the root DS key. If any keys do not verify, then an administrator is informed. The hardest method so far to try and solve have been the secure distribution of the root ds keys. Again the wiki page mentions some of the methods being discussed. Having the OpenNIC root DNSSEC signed will be a great step forward, as OpenNIC already has 4 DNSSEC enabled TLDs.

Along with this work, OpenNIC will be publsihing a list of TLDs that are DNSSEC signed. This will give more members exposure to signed TLDs.

Tier2 Monitoring Win! PDF Print E-mail

A lot of work has gone into OpenNIC in the past 4 years focused on automation of our process's. This has recently been applied to our process of maintaining OpenNIC's list of Tier2 servers. In a past life Tier2 servers officially supported by OpenNIC were not regularly monitored to see if they can resolve all of our domains or not.

Due to a lot of hard work by Jeff and Brian this process is mostly automated. Not only are the servers regularly checked every 2 hours, the Tier2 list is dynamically updated with each Tier2's status. If a Tier2 server is detected as having issues an email is sent to the admin every two hours.

This great effort by Jeff and Brian has vastly improved the accuracy of OpenNIC's list of Tier2 servers. Their efforts are very much appreciated!

New TLD PDF Print E-mail

OpenNIC as of the 25/07/2008 has the ING TLD active in its root. This TLD will prove to be a success based on the broad range of use for it. A number of domains have been reserved to prevent potential abuse of such a gret TLD.

Tim is the hostmaster for the TLD, and is relatively new to OpenNIC. He has donated a T1 server for the TLD, and soon will have a T2 based in Newcastle, Asutralia to donate.

This is good news for OpenNIC as it brings our T1 server count to 7, which is a vast improvement from what we have had since the revival.

Good job guys!
